Food safety & allergens

Eating home-cooked food should be a joy and a confident choice. Here's how Simmr supports food safety and allergen transparency.

Food Hygiene Ratings

Home cooks in the UK should register as a food business with their local council and may receive a Food Hygiene Rating (FHRS) from 0 to 5. Where a kitchen provides its rating, we display it as a badge on their storefront so you can see it before you order.

Allergen information

UK law requires food businesses to provide accurate information about the 14 major allergens — including gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, soya, sesame, celery, mustard, lupin and sulphites. On Simmr, cooks declare allergens on each dish, and tiffin boxes inherit the allergens of their components.

If you have a food allergy

  • Always check the allergen information shown on each dish before ordering.
  • If you have a serious allergy, contact the cook directly to discuss your needs and how the food is prepared.
  • Remember home kitchens may handle many ingredients, so cross-contamination can't always be ruled out.

For cooks

Keep your Food Hygiene Rating up to date in your settings, declare allergens accurately on every dish, and follow safe food handling and storage practices. Getting allergens right isn't optional — it keeps your customers safe and your business trusted. See our guide on starting a home food business.
